Last year we were funded by Genesis Housing Association in London to provide a free filmmaking course to unemployed young people in Woodberry Down. Genesis are working hard to improve the Woodberry Down area, building a positive, thriving environment for it’s residents and we’re very pleased to say that our collaboration with the organisation is continuing in 2016!
We’ve been funded to do a second filmmaking course, following the success of last years. As in 2015, this course will last for 11 weeks, taking participants through all the basic elements of filmmaking; scriptwriting, production planning, storyboarding, camera training, editing and everything in between. Our workshop leaders guide participants through the filmmaking process, and then our groups create their own short films, music videos or documentaries. After the course we hold a big local screening, where participants can showcase their work for the local community, their friends and families. This is one of our favourite parts of the course (though, as filmmakers, we love all parts of getting to make films for 11 weeks) because it’s so rewarding to see the community come to celebrate the talent of the local area (also there are free refreshments – can’t go wrong).
Due to the popular demand for the first course, the new Spring edition has been opened out and is now more accessible to the wider community of Woodberry Down, with participants ranging from 18-55! Last years course went swimmingly, and you can find blogs about each session over on the Blueprint: Film Academy website. Some are more ridiculous than others – we had great fun on set last year, even though at times it was a bit hectic, including last minute schedule changes resulting in Laura bringing her ‘mascot’ to set (he was loved by all).
We’ve got quite a few new community film and video projects happening in London over the coming weeks, from our office in Bethnal Green and beyond! Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting opportunities in your area!
