We’re been very busy over the past few months since we finished our last Magna Carta inspired project, Radiating Signals.
The project keeping us on our toes, awake at night and generally occupying most of chris’ brain has been Festival800.
Festival800 takes place in Lincoln between 28 August – 6 September 2015 across a range of venues in Lincoln. The principle behind the festival programme is how the themes of Magna Carta are relevant to life in 2015 and beyond. Securing a lineup of internationally renowned artists, performers and public figures, the festival provides an eclectic mix of events that will inspire, inform and entertain. All the events have a strong grounding in the themes of Human rights, freedom, democracy and justice.
We’ve been involved from the offset, producing a logo, brand guidelines and visual theme for the Festival that has guided every visual output from the festival team. It was important to us to develop a strong identity that was relatable to the founding principles but with a nod to the future and the contemporary setting of the festival.
Once the rest of Festival team had put together the draft programme of events, restarted work on the all important festival brochure. We wanted to create an item that was pocketable yet attractive and different enough to stand out amongst cluttered POS areas. We settled on a small (A5 width) square format with a heavier weight cover. The design utilises single page and split page event formats that are adapted to highlight certain key events. A consistent icon based grid of event information was used to format key data into a system that was easy to read and understand on every event listing. The festival also contains a ‘fringe’ festival programme that needed to match the overall design theme but stand out as being separated from the main festival. For this we used a grey background and stripped out the colour to a produce a monochrome typeset on these pages.
Alongside the brochure design we put together a fully responsive festival website – festival800.co.uk – that picked up the same visual cues developed in the brochure design so the print and digital touch points for customers work together as one. The website has venue mapping and ticket links all embedded in each event listing for ease of use. The homepage contains all the festival events and will automatically evolve as the festival goes on to only reflect events still available to attend.
We’ll still be working on the festival producing more collateral right up to the event before switching to filming the event and making a range of films promoting the events taking place. Busy time folks!
