Every Friday we pick out short films from across the web that have made a particular impression on us. From animations, to narrative and documentary shorts; it’s always good to check out other creator’s work. And now more than ever, short films offer the perfect distraction. They can make us laugh, cry, or teach us something we didn’t know already. With another month coming to a close, we’ve compiled our picks for the best short films of April into one handy list! Take a scroll down and get inspired!
We fancied a bit of a laugh at the start of April. Luckily Daniel Castro & Rinee Shah's brilliantly quirky short film, 'Spooners', proved to be just the solution. We love the editing and set design of this one - which is filled with amazing details. We're also a sucker for good titles - and this has plenty of them! Brilliant art direction, a sharp screenplay and quirky style; what's not to love?
We loved Tyler Pacana's animated explainer about... animation. Blending narrative with explainer - it uses different animated styles to explain the process of bringing a character to life. Following a central character through a journey of animated styles is a stroke of genius. And it's executed perfectly.
Lydia Rui's beautiful short is a testament to the power of subtle and restrained storytelling. The layered story gives you new details at just the right time, and Rui's direction feels personal and intimate. We're also big fans of the look of this one - with tight frames and a focus on faces. Cinematography wise it's really something. Definitely one to watch if you're in the mood for a slightly deeper piece!
Our final pick of the month is a short that seemed to constantly subvert expectations. John Ogunmuyiwa's 'Mandem' establishes itself as one thing, but, come the final frame, evolves into something else entirely. It's a difficult trick to pull off, but it's perfectly handled here. beautifully shot, and confidently acted by two insanely watchable leads; we loved the journey this film takes you on. Keeping a day-in-the-life narrative engaging and unique is often easier said than done, but we think this one is definitely one to watch. So that's all from September folks!
